Islamabad - After heading the ministry of textiles for almost one year, Abbas Khan Afridi on Thursday left the office after retiring as a senator.
Minister for Textile Industry in a farewell speech to the ministry officials stated that his aim was to serve the nation and that day after retiring as a senator/minister, he feels content with his efforts made for the people of FATA and textile sector. The minister reiterated that he has devoted his life for the people of Pakistan and would keep on striving for the rights of the deprived FATA. The minister mentioned that he takes pride to be the highest taxpayer parliamentarian and in a short span of less than a year, he was successful in announcing textile policy and ensured uninterrupted gas supply to textile sector. After the departure of Afridi, one of the most important ministries of the country has become head less again. The textile sector contributes 57 per cent to the country’s exports.
Secretary Textile Industry Amir Marwat would be in charge of the affairs until new minister is not appointed.
There are rumours that Khurram Dastagir could be given additional charge of this important and small department comprising around 120 officials.
It was sudden, there were expectations that Afridi would win the Senate seat and would hold the portfolio, but he lost unexpectedly, one of the Ministry official shared his views.
This disappointment was apparent in the tone of Afridi also, who opted not to comment on his tenure as a minister textiles, when scribe approached him.
Afridi has left the ministry at a time when the implementation of the textile policy is in kick off stage.
The officials believe the implementation phase could only start, if someone with strong leadership qualities with quick decision-making skills is appointed as head either as secretary or minister.
