PV Sindhu

PV Sindhu beat Olympic champion Carolina Marin 21-19, 21-16 to win the India Open final at the Siri Fort Complex here on Sunday. In front of a loud home crowd, Sindhu lost the lead just twice in an otherwise spectacular display of aggression against the Rio Olympics gold medallist.

Sindhu raced to a 6-1 lead in the first game but Marin typically raised her display a notch mid-game to bring down the deficit to just two at the first break. A service fault by Marin allowed Sindhu to hold on to a two-point lead but then the Spaniard won consecutive points to level off at 16-16.

Marin went on to take the lead twice but a resolute Sindhu fought back to win the first game 21-19. Clearly on a high after winning the first game, Sindhu went with her flow, producing an array of smashes and drop shots that took Marin completely by surprise.
